As with all cultures there is a huge differentiation between the different families that I have had the privilege to encounter. I have perceived the underlying social and economic spectrum that exists within the Gypsy and Traveller communities. However, all Gypsies and Travellers are fiercely proud of their heritage and their culture. Dignity is evident throughout the communities regardless of their economic status.
Also, pride in their children is apparent. A strong sense of family identity exists with all. The extended family is important and supportive with the raising of the children. I constantly encountered groups of children playing freely outside their homes in the secure knowledge that they were safe.
I have presented children from different spectrums of the Gypsy and Traveller communities. These portraitures capture the inherent dignity and pride that their parents display. I have been surprised by their emotive and intense gazes. Placing the children in their unique environments will help the viewer identify and question their perceived notions of these minority groups.
